Whether for work, travel or play, a good backpack is indispensable. It should not only be able to carry all your items with ease, but also provide comfort, durability, convenience and style.
One of the world’s leading brands when it comes to making quality backpacks is Kipling. Founded in Antwerp, Belgium in 1987, the company’s name and iconic monkey logo is inspired by British author Rudyard Kipling of The Jungle Book fame. Their tagline ‘Live.Light’ is a reflection of the brand’s fun and unencumbered philosophy of living life to the fullest, in a light-hearted way. Kipling bags are available in over 80 countries, and are popular for offering a balance of trendy fashion, quality and affordability.
Every good brand has its own signature design or material that makes it unique. For Kipling, it’s the special crinkle nylon material that is used in its bags, which has been the mainstay of the brand for over three decades. It was developed by accident by the company’s three founders, when the nylon fabric overheated during the dying process and left it crinkled. Rather than start all over again, the designers incorporated this new formula into their products – resulting in a durable yet lightweight and water-resistant material fabric, with a texture similar to sportswear and a luxe finish that can be dyed in multiple colours. Crinkle nylon is easy to clean, thanks to its water resistant properties, making it convenient to wipe down and dry. Stains can also be cleaned out with a cloth or soft brush, using just water and soap, so maintenance is minimal.
Kipling has backpacks for almost every occasion; for men, women, teens and children. Designs vary according to preferences. There are models built for use at school or the office, so they come with dedicated laptop sleeves; others are geared towards day-trippers or travellers, so they offer spacious interiors, external pockets for easy organisation or side pockets for water bottles, so you can stay hydrated on the go. There are also versatile models that can be carried in a variety of ways, such as those that come equipped with a telescoping handle and wheels, as well as those that include detachable straps that convert the backpack into a shoulder bag or sling bag. These can be reattached easily to carry like a traditional backpack, keeping your hands free.
Here are some of the different types of backpacks that Kipling currently offers:
Mini backpack –
Smaller than regular backpacks, these are ideal for a fun day out with friends or when you don’t want to lug around a large backpack. Compact, lightweight and convenient, they often have just enough space for essentials such as your wallet or a water bottle.
Convertible backpacks –
The name ‘backpack’ often means you carry it on your back, but some models are versatile and offer multiple carrying options, converting the backpack into a shoulder bag, a sling bag or even a tote by simply attaching or removing the included straps. There are also designs with larger top handles, such as the Art series, that allow you to carry it like a tote if needed. Others come with telescoping handles and wheels, allowing users to wheel it like a luggage bag.
Taking a cue from outdoor bags and duffels, Kipling’s expandable backpacks, as the name suggests, can be expanded to offer more or less room. This is usually achieved by unzipping a section of the backpack, giving it extra inches. Examples of this style include the Redro series, and with its sporty look, its ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.
Why mess with flaps and buckles when you can simply draw it shut? Kipling offers convenience with its range of drawstring backpacks. Drawstring designs are basic but functional, and often stylish in a minimalist way. The only drawback to them is the lack of compartments.
Features That Make Kipling Bags Stand Out
Size / Capacity –
Depending on your usage, you will want to look for a backpack that best suits your space needs – and Kipling backpacks come in a variety of sizes for you to choose from. For work and school, users might go for a medium to large-sized backpack that fits a laptop, several thick binders, notes, books and stationary. Medium to large backpacks are also suited for travellers who do not want the hassle of checking in their suitcases at the airport. Small backpacks are good for day trips or outings.
Comfort is an important aspect to consider when choosing the right backpack, as many people carry a lot of weight in their backpacks. The model you choose should be lightweight but durable and able to carry weight without unnecessary strain. Look for ergonomic designs and shapes, padded shoulder straps or adjustable options that take the weight off your back and shoulders.
Build and Durability –
Kipling bags are usually made from crinkled nylon, which is sturdy and should last you years of use. Consider the quality of the accessories, zippers and stitching as well.
Basic designs such as the drawstring backpacks do not have compartments. If you’re using the backpack as a cycling pack, for example, this makes it easy to retrieve the few items you’d carry such as a water bottle or keys. If you’re travelling, however, trying to root for your items at the bottom of the backpack can be a hassle. Opt for designs that come with different compartments; ideally an easy access pocket at the front. Designs with side pockets make it easy to store small items such as snacks or water bottles, as well. If you’re using it for work or school, having a dedicated padded laptop sleeve or a tablet compartment will help protect your electronics from unexpected bumps and knocks.
The ability to carry the backpack multiple ways is another point to consider. Some backpacks have large top carry handles for when you want to carry it as a tote bag, while others can be carried as a crossbody backpack, a sling bag, or transformed into a wheeled luggage-style bag, and more.
Models with buckles or fasteners might be more secure at deterring thieves compared to basic designs. There are also models with double the protection, featuring a zippered main compartment topped by a magnetic flap closure.
Kipling backpacks are easily distinguishable for their unique style, and they come in a variety of colours and designs. The basic models are minimalist yet classy and trendy, while the printed backpacks convey a fun fashion statement. Most if not all of Kipling’s backpacks come with a monkey key fob.

The chic and fashionable Alcatraz series is an ideal companion for daily use such as for work and school, as well as for travel. The backpack is roomy and spacious but not too bulky, and at 16.2 x 18 x 8.5 inches, is compact enough to bring as a carry-on luggage for flights – perfect for day trips or short holidays.
The Alcatraz comes in a variety of cool and interesting colours and looks to match your style. The black, true blue and dark plum are classic choices, while the Dragonfly Distressed print adds a touch of fun and quirky. For something that would not look out of place in a fashionista’s look book, the Metallic Pewter dazzles with its shiny finish. All designs come with matching zippers and accents.
The Alcatraz’s top flap is secured by an easy-to-use plastic buckle closure. Multiple outer compartments, including the front pocket and two side pockets, allow users to easily retrieve small items, such as keys, handphones and accessories. These are all zippered for extra security and protection. However, the side pockets are too small to be used for storing water bottles. The interior is roomy and holds a dedicated laptop sleeve that holds a 15 inch laptop. The backpack also comes with a cute monkey accessory that can be hung from the zippers.
Build and Comfort
Featuring the brand’s signature crinkle nylon material, the Alcatraz is lightweight and water resistant. Stains can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth before drying. To ensure long lasting colour, direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided. The material is tough, sturdy and resistant to tears. Meanwhile, the padded, adjustable back straps help to cushion the shoulders as you carry the backpack.
The Alcatraz can be carried like a traditional backpack, or turned into a wheeled luggage bag, thanks to its telescoping handle and two smooth-operating rubber wheels at the bottom. When in wheeled mode, you don’t have to worry about the straps getting in the way as they can be tucked neatly away. The handle is designed in such a way that it doesn’t press uncomfortably into your back either when carrying it as a normal backpack.
That being said, the quality of the zippers and components can be improved. The telescoping handle, especially, does not hold up well to abuse and tends to break down long before the backpack itself.

Named after the bustling city of Seoul in South Korea, the Seoul Go series reflects the vibrant yet refined soul of this cultural melting pot, with a minimalist yet edgy design. It is part of the brand’s Essentials Back to School collection, and was designed with students in mind. The backpack measures 35 x 44 x 22 cm, with a capacity of 27 litres. It is also very lightweight, at just 0.64 kg.
Users will be spoiled for choice as the Seoul Go comes in no less than 22 different colours and prints. Make a statement in bold, loud and eye-catching designs such as the Conversation Heart and Very Berry, go for fun prints like the printed prism combo and blushing posies, or stay simple and sporty with shades like True Blue and Blue Beam Tonal. The furry monkey keychain adds a playful touch.
The Seoul Go has a classic double zipper design, along with two elastic pockets at each side for water bottles. The large zippered front pocket is handy for keeping items in reach, and comes with an organiser within, complete with pen pockets, phone and wallet compartments. Meanwhile, the interior of the main storage area has a 15 inch laptop sleeve.
Build and Comfort
The Seoul Go is made from the brand’s signature crinkled nylon, with polyester lining. The padded backpack straps are thick and comfy, with a 15 inch shoulder drop, adjustable for length. It is meant to be carried as a conventional backpack, but has a large top handle for when you need to grip it from the top. The only downside is the inconsistent stitch quality, which seems to affect some units.

The accents are in a metallic gold finish, which can appear gaudy to some. There is a front pocket which lies flush when against the main compartment; well suited for keeping tablets or mobile phones. Two smaller zippered front pockets are useful for keeping small items such as keys and cards, while the side slip pockets can be used for water bottles. On the inside, the Tina offers ample space for books and stationery, as well as a padded laptop sleeve for 15-inch laptops.
Build and Comfort
The Tina is made from water-resistant crinkle nylon with a patent vegan trim that resembles faux leather. The material can get rather warm when worn over the back, however, so keep this in mind if travelling in a tropical climate.
The shoulder straps are padded for extra comfort and provides even weight distribution, reducing the load on your back. The straps are also adjustable to fit different heights and body sizes. Switch between carrying the backpack on your back or utilise the single top handle for easy lifting. Another nice feature of Tina is the back strap, which can be easily looped over the handle of a luggage bag to make travel more convenient and seamless. The overall build is durable; if there was a downside it would be the zippers which are less sturdy and have a tendency to slide open.

When using as a wheeled luggage, the straps can be tucked away neatly so as not to interfere with the movement of the luggage.
Whether for work, study or play, Kipling’s Micah backpack is designed for the modern girl or woman on the go. Measuring 12 x 15.5 x 6 inches, pack the bag with books, folders, a laptop for work or school, or clothing and essentials for day trips. Despite the compact size, which easily fits underneath the seat of an airplane, the backpack offers up to 24 litres of space and is very lightweight at just 1.4lbs.
The Micah comes in either bright red cherry or jaded green. The former is eye-popping and easy to spot from a distance, while the latter is rugged and sporty looking. Another handy feature is the zipper at the back of the backpack which provides added security for important documents such as passports and identity cards while you travel. The 16” padded shoulder strap is adjustable, and users can also use the top carry handle to lift the backpack easily.
Say goodbye to heavy loads, tired shoulders and fatigue with Kipling’s Echo II backpack, which makes travelling and commuting a breeze. At 13.75 x 19.5 x 8.25 inches, it offers plenty of space for all your essentials, including multiple pockets for organisation and a dedicated laptop compartment. The compact dimensions also mean that it is easy to stow under the seat of an aeroplane or in the overhead compartment. Use it for school, at work, or as a carry-on luggage while you travel. The backpack is relatively lightweight at 4.32 lbs.
The Echo II is functional yet stylish, with double zippers opening up into the main compartment and a large front pocket, as well as a smaller zippered pouch. The side pockets are deep and can comfortably hold large water bottles. Choices of colours are limited, as it only comes in navy blue with white/grey accents, but the brand’s signature furry monkey keychain is included. The interior features a laptop sleeve for 15-inch laptops, and organisational compartments for keeping stationery, keys, cards and other small items.
Build and Comfort
The Echo II is made from Kipling’s signature water-resistant crinkle nylon, complemented by polyester lining and plastic zippers. Carry it like a traditional backpack with padded, adjustable shoulder straps, leaving your hands free for other tasks, or extend the handle to turn the backpack into a wheeled luggage bag. The straps can be tucked away neatly so they will not drag on the ground as you pull. Unlike the Alcatraz model which only has two wheels, the Echo II offers 360-degree mobility with four spinner wheels. Users can also use the top carry handle to lift the backpack easily. That being said, while the quality of the fabric and stitching is durable, the wheels and handle are not as long lasting.
One of Kipling’s more affordable ranges, the Keeper backpack for women is a versatile unit that exudes classic chic. Measuring 14 x 14.5 x 7.5 inches, it is the ideal size for day trips, work and school, being compact enough to carry easily but still offering plenty of space for books, stationery, clothes and more. It weighs just 1.2 lbs.
The Keeper boasts a classic silhouette, with a drawstring closure topped by a flap closure with buckle for added security. Accessing this is easy as there is a hidden side zipper pocket, which means you don’t even have to unfasten the top to get to your items. The main compartment is spacious and although it lacks a dedicated laptop sleeve, it comes with two large dividers to keep everything organised. The sizable front zip pocket is handy for keeping cards, keys and other items that you need access to frequently. The only downside would be that it lacks side pockets for storing water bottles.
The backpack comes in 11 colours, from the plain-looking true black, night grey and jaded green tonal to the more eye-catching fresh teal tonal or glistening poppy blue. Details such as the contrast stitching and large zippers make the entire piece pop. Also included on the backpack is Kipling’s signature monkey key fob.
Build and Comfort
The Keeper is made from the brand’s signature crinkle nylon, complemented by 100 % polyester lining and pleather accents. The top carry handle is handy when you need a break from carrying it on your back, and the padded shoulder straps are adjustable to fit different body shapes, sizes and carrying styles.
The Hiker series is a great choice for both travel and everyday use. At 12.75 x 16.75 x 8 inches, the backpack offers a capacity of 38L and is very roomy, but is still compact enough to act as carry-on luggage or fit it underneath the plane seat. At 1.75 lbs, it is also quite lightweight and easy to carry. Taking its cue from luggage bags, one of the model’s most convenient features is the expansion zipper which adds around three inches of depth, allowing users to pack even more.
The Hiker has a classic, rounded backpack design and comes in four colours. The black and true blue are simple and minimalist, while the Very Berry and Vibrant Pink’s bright shades are easy to spot from a distance, and is sure to draw compliments. The exterior features two large zippered pockets; one on the front of the other, which is useful for keeping items such as mobile phones, tissues, napkins and pens. The single-zippered design, however, means that the pocket must be zipped up to the maximum to prevent items from falling out. The interior is very roomy and keeps books, clothes and more, with a dedicated laptop sleeve. It is also padded for extra cushion against bumps and knocks. Dangling from the key ring is the brand’s monkey key fob. The backpack lacks side pockets for water bottles.
Build and Comfort
The Hiker’s crinkle nylon is water resistant and easy to clean, while the padded straps are adjustable to different heights. The strap material does not have enough resistance and may slip if you are carrying it on one shoulder. They also do not seem to hold heavy loads well and some users have complained of the straps cutting into their shoulders. On the upside, the top carry handle lets you take a break from carrying the backpack on your back, and the base and back panel are also padded for extra comfort.
Cute and stylish yet functional best describes Kipling’s Alber series, a 3-in-1 convertible mini backpack that is small in size but big on value and practicality. Part of the Kipling Lunar Plus collection, it measures 6.25 x 8.75 x 3.25 inches and offers a capacity of 3.5 litres. Its mini size makes it ideal for a day out with friends or sightseeing. Use the backpack for keeping important items such as passports, a water bottle and your wallet. Since the bag weighs just 0.31 kg, it will feel almost weightless on your back.
The Alber offers a range of colours and designs, with plain colours such as alabaster tonal, black tonal, jaded green and cloud grey metallic, as well as prints including Delicate Vines, Camo, Roaming Roses and Tile Print. The Grey Gold range is particularly attractive, with a dark colour scheme that is complemented by flecks of gold.
Keep your items secure in the main compartment, which comes with a zippered pocket within, or place them in the front pouch for convenient reach. There is also a smaller zippered pocket on the pouch to keep items organised. All of the outer zippers are large and slide open seamlessly. The backpack comes with a colour-matching furry monkey key fob. Owing to its compact size, the backpack does not have side pockets for water bottles.
Build and Comfort
Thanks to its versatile build, you can wear the Alber multiple ways. Carry it like a conventional backpack with the bag’s adjustable straps, or remove one strap to turn it into a crossbody or bum bag. This makes it a fun multipurpose bag that is as suited for daily use as it is for a relaxing weekend. Alternatively, carry it by hand using the top handle when you need a break. The material is crinkle nylon with polyester lining, so it is resistant against water and easy to clean.
Convertible from a backpack into a shoulder bag or bum bag

A showcase of style and versatility at its finest, the Alvy can be worn as a backpack by day to school or work, then converted into a stylish tote bag for an evening dinner or a night out. Available in the brighter blue beam tonal and sophisticated true blue, the external, rectangular-shaped front pouch is divided into two sections; one with a protective flap for keeping cards, keys and accessories, while the other is zippered and more spacious for mobile phones, notebooks and pens. The two side pockets are designed to hold small items rather than water bottles. Meanwhile, the main compartment is roomy and even comes with a zippered section so you can keep everything organised. Not to be missed is the furry monkey key fob as an added touch.
Build and Comfort
The Alvy is made from crinkle nylon which is water resistant, making the bag easy to clean and soft and comfortable to touch. The backpack straps are detachable, for when you need to carry it as a tote, and the wide handle is comfortable to hold. One downside is the straps which are set wide apart and have a tendency to slip off the shoulders if they are not adjusted tightly.
Two-in-one style, convert from backpack to tote bag

Build and Comfort
The Bennett has water resistant properties, thanks to its crinkle nylon construction. The adjustable padded backpack straps ensure load is distributed evenly, and when your back and shoulders get tired, you can use the comfortable top carry handle for a better grip.

The Art Medium is a redesign of the brand’s popular Art Tote series and comes in several classic colours such as Dark Plum, Night Grey and True Black, as well as the sporty Aqua Frost and Camo Leather. The spacious main compartment, which has a zippered pocket as well as two open pouches for keeping pens, cards and keys, is secured at the top via a drawstring closure. Build and Comfort
The Art Medium is made from crinkled nylon and features water resistant properties, complemented by polyester lining. The stitching is top quality, and overall build is durable and sturdy. It can be carried on the back with adjustable straps, or using the dual top handles as a tote bag. Compact in size but big on style and functionality, Kipling’s Annic backpack is the ideal choice for the modern trendsetter who is always on the go. It measures a mere 9.75 x 10.25 x 4.75 inches and weighs just 0.85 lbs, with a capacity of 7 litres. While it is not large enough to carry a laptop or a lot of books, it can be used to store essentials such as a wallet, keys, a small water bottle and a notebook. It is also convenient for travelling.
Simple but chic, the Annic comes in plain colours such as Cloud Metal, Dark Plum, Night Grey and True Black, as well as Retro Floral and Tile Print for those who like a touch of patterned flair. The backpack is secured by a zipper as well as a flap closure with magnetic snap for additional security. The brand’s signature monkey keychain comes attached to the key fob. Meanwhile, the interior consists of a spacious main compartment, and a zippered section for keeping accessories, cards, keys, lipstick and other small items. However, the design may be too simple for some, as it lacks both outer and inner pockets to keep items organised.
Build and Comfort
Like most of Kipling’s other models, the Annic is made from crinkled nylon and has water resistant properties. One of the Annic’s best features is that it can be worn multiple ways. Use the straps to carry it as a conventional backpack, or remove one and convert it into a shoulder bag. You can also remove both and use the top carry handle, which is wide and offers a good grip.
